This unique process of turning wood into stone is termed as per-mineralization, meaning that all organic materials are being replaced by minerals (mostly a silicate, like quartz), whilst maintaining the primary configuration of the wood. As opposed to other characters of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three-dimensional statement of the original organic material.
The petrification process occurs underground with perseverance, when the wood becomes buried under the sediment and is initially preserved due to a inadequacy of oxygen which inhibits impact-full decomposition.
