Incorporating Wellness Spaces into Your Home: From Everyday Luxury to Ultimate Indulgence

As a luxury interior designer, I have seen an undeniable shift in how we approach our homes. No longer just places to live, they are now sanctuaries—spaces designed to nurture our well-being, restore balance, and offer a retreat from the fast-paced world outside. Wellness in interior design is no longer a passing trend; it is an essential part of creating a truly luxurious home.

At the heart of this philosophy is the idea that wellness should be woven into the fabric of our daily lives, whether through subtle touches or grand, indulgent gestures. Right now, I am working on an incredibly indulgent outdoor Nordic spa area for a client in Cheshire. Set within beautifully landscaped gardens, it will feature an infrared sauna, an ice bath and a meditation deck, all designed to create an immersive wellness experience. While this level of luxury is undeniably enviable, wellness can be incorporated into any home, regardless of scale.

Creating a Sanctuary: The Foundations of a Wellness Space

Wellness in interior design starts with the atmosphere. The right lighting, textures, and materials can instantly create a sense of calm. Natural materials such as wood, stone, linen, and wool connect us to nature, while soft, diffused lighting (think warm LED strips or dimmable wall sconces) creates a soothing ambience.

Scent also plays a huge role. Essential oil diffusers, scented candles, or even fresh eucalyptus in a steam-filled shower can turn an ordinary bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Sound is another crucial element, whether it’s integrated speaker systems for meditative playlists or a small water feature that adds a gentle, calming trickle.

Everyday Wellness: Simple Ways to Introduce Calm into Your Home

For those seeking accessible ways to infuse wellness into their homes, start with the bedroom. Sleep is a cornerstone of well-being, and a bedroom designed for rest is one of the most powerful wellness investments you can make. Opt for high-quality linen bedding, blackout curtains, and, if space allows, a reading nook with a comfortable chair and soft lighting. I often recommend Himalayan salt lamps, which emit a warm, ambient glow and are believed to purify the air.

Bathrooms are another area where wellness can be easily enhanced. A rainfall shower-head, a freestanding bath, or even a dedicated shelf for luxurious bath oils and fluffy towels can elevate the experience. Heated floors, while often seen as a luxury, can be surprisingly affordable and add an undeniable sense of indulgence.

If space allows, a dedicated meditation or yoga corner can be transformative. This doesn’t need to be a vast space but just a quiet corner with a comfortable mat, a meditation cushion, and perhaps a shelf for candles or incense. If you have an unused alcove then turn it into a wellness nook with sheer curtains, soft cushions, and a sound machine playing gentle rain sounds – it can be your go-to space for morning mindfulness.

Elevated Wellness: Luxury Spaces for Ultimate Relaxation

For those looking to create a more immersive wellness experience, bespoke spa bathrooms and home saunas are increasingly in demand. Imagine stepping into a bathroom clad in warm marble, with a built-in steam function, an aromatherapy system, and integrated chromotherapy lighting that shifts depending on your mood.

Saunas are another indulgence that is growing in popularity, especially in high-end properties. Whether it’s an infrared sauna for gentle detoxification or a traditional Finnish sauna, these additions offer incredible health benefits, from improved circulation to stress reduction. My Cheshire client’s Nordic spa, for instance, will include a handcrafted wooden sauna with panoramic views of the garden, making it a true escape from the everyday.

Bringing the Outdoors In: Nature as a Wellness Feature

One of the most powerful elements of wellness design is the connection between indoors and outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling windows, biophilic design, and carefully curated indoor greenery can significantly enhance well-being. A living wall, an indoor water feature, or even a simple arrangement of potted plants can create an instant sense of serenity.

For those with outdoor space, wellness can extend beyond the home. From Japanese-inspired rock gardens to outdoor meditation pods, the possibilities are endless. For one of my projects in Hereford, I have designed a relaxation deck with a firepit for evening contemplation, framed by softly lit foliage and the sound of trickling water with a freshwater pond. It’s all about crafting an experience that engages all the senses.

Whether it’s a small yet intentional change—like upgrading your bedding or introducing a reading nook or a grand investment in a private spa, creating a wellness-focused home is about prioritising comfort, relaxation, and well-being. In my world, true opulence isn’t just about aestheticsits about how a space makes you feel.

For those dreaming of a home that nourishes the mind, body, and soul, the key is to design with intention. Because ultimately, a well-designed home isn’t just about looking beautiful a its about living beautifully.
